I have a couple of different weeds in my yard and I definitely don’t know what they are…if I take a picture how can I send it to you for identification. I live in Maryland. Which I think is zone 7.??..I also like perennials and none of the ones I planted yielded anything this year, probably because of the weeds..daffodils are the only flower that seems to grow…while I love them, they die out in a couple of months and I would love to have some flowers throughout te entire summer and into the fall..and don’t even get me started with the Black Walnut Tree..know anybody who wants to buy some walnuts…they are expensive in the stores…..they drop in my yard each year..sometimes it skips a year..yaay..but they get wasted…this tree is my problem also..thanks!
Thelma,
You can submit up to 3 photos to our email address. plantrama at gmail – and we’ll do our best to ID as long as they are in focus. There is a saying among perennial gardeners: “First year sleep, second year creep, third year leap” and this might apply to your new perennials. And yes, keeping on top of the weeds makes a huge difference in perennial gardens…it’s why perennial gardens are the most high-maintenance beds you can have. Note that any branches of the walnut tree that hang over into your property can be cut to your property line if that will help. Try growing daylilies, goldenrod, and perennial asters as they are quite hardy.
What type of perennial flowers will grow near a Black Walnut Tree..I live in Maryland. Zone 7..I think. The tree is not in my yard but in the vacant lot yard next to me
It is huge and the branches hang over in my yard. I mapped out a flower bed in the area in my yard in front of the tree and nothing has grown there but weeds. Thanks! Enjoyed the podcast!
Thelma,
These plants will grow near black walnuts but you’ll need to match the amount of light they receive to the plant. For example the Shasta Daisies need full to part sun (at least 4 hours during the middle of the day) while the Hosta will grow in shade.
